The Loretto Trust sent a letter to President Conboy expressing strong concern and objection to Saint Mary’s College’s decision to award an honorary degree to Mary McAleese, the former President of Ireland, who has also been invited to serve as this year’s commencement speaker. Since leaving the presidency, Dr. McAleese has used her influence to weaken the Catholic Church's moral authority. The granting of this honor to Dr. McAleese, not only demonstrates SMC's willingness to disregard fundamental Church principles but sends a doubiously misleading message to graduates, students, and the broader Catholic community regarding the principles that Saint Mary’s College upholds.
Loretto Trust appeals to the Sisters of the Holy Cross to live their Catholic identity with active distinction and establish a Center for the Study of Spirituality with a clear Catholic orientation.
We are ready to do more, and need talented legal and financial minds, marketing and communications gurus, fundraisers, development and outreach practitioners, project managers, administrators, and more.
