Uniting Alumnae and Friends to Safeguard the Catholic Identity of Saint Mary’s College

Transgender admission policy reversal

Our Trigger Point

In a controversial departure from Catholic doctrine, Saint Mary’s College quietly established a policy in late 2023 to admit biological males identifying as women into its all-female undergraduate program.

This decision, made with little input from alumnae or the broader Catholic community, sparked widespread backlash for contradicting the College’s historic mission and Catholic anthropology, which affirms the immutability of biological sex.

Our History

Although the “transgender” admissions policy was officially reversed, alumnae and friends of Saint Mary’s were left unsettled by the administration’s handling of the issue and its failure to affirm Catholic teaching. Rather than rejecting the policy outright, College leaders merely “tabled” it—signaling that, with time, strategic messaging, and a more compliant campus culture, it could be reintroduced. This ambiguity has fueled ongoing concern and vigilance among alumnae and supporters. In response, a growing number have united to form a sustained and organized voice committed to defending the Catholic mission of Saint Mary’s College and ensuring future decisions remain faithful to the Church’s teaching and the College’s founding values.

With guidance from Sycamore Trust—an organization with nearly two decades of experience challenging the erosion of Catholic identity at Notre Dame—the Loretto Trust was launched. The Trust serves as a source of information, a collective voice, and a means of joint action for Saint Mary’s College alumnae and others in the Saint Mary’s family who are determined to preserve the College’s Catholic identity and the founding tradition of faithfully educating women in accordance with the teachings of the Church.

The swift creation of a Facebook group dedicated to preserving the College’s Catholic character quickly drew hundreds of alumnae, reflecting a groundswell of concern and commitment. What began as an online conversation rapidly evolved into coordinated action, with alumnae organizing petitions, letter-writing campaigns, and strategic outreach to College leadership. This spontaneous yet resolute response made clear that Saint Mary’s graduates would not remain silent as their alma mater drifted from its Catholic foundation.

Why do we educate our daughters? Briefly, we educate them for exactly the reason that God made them: to know, to love, to serve, to glorify Him now and forever.
